Richard Keys’ astonishing Man City claim backfires after Allardyce relegation

Sam Allardyce has been relegated from the Premier League for the first time in his managerial career – making Richard Keys' bizarre suggestion for him to join Manchester City's coaching staff earlier this season all the more baffling.

Allardyce's West Brom have dropped back down to the Championship following a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday, which has left them 10 points adrift of safety with only three games to play.

The Baggies have endured a miserable campaign, winning just five matches and suffering 19 defeats out of 35.

And their relegation has ended Allardyce's streak of keeping teams afloat in the Premier League throughout his 30-year managerial career.

Big Sam was brought in at West Brom purposely to avoid the drop back in December, when he replaced sacked boss Slaven Bilic in the hot-seat.

But not even he could save them from the dreaded drop, with Sunday's defeat at Arsenal finally confirming what has long felt like the inevitable.

Keys may well be regretting his comments about Allardyce at the start of the season, which saw him urge Pep Guardiola to add him to his backroom staff at City – who are on the verge of wrapping up the Premier League title.

After City's 5-2 defeat at home to Leicester back in September, the beIN SPORTS presenter said when discussing Guardiola's defensive problems: "He could bring Sam Allardyce in on a temporary basis".

West Brom's fate was sealed at the Emirates on Sunday night, when goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Willian ensured Matheus Pereira's strike was nothing but a consolation.
