REVEALED: The worrying Atletico Madrid omen for Manchester City…

The worrying Atletico Madrid omen for Manchester City… Diego Simeone’s side have NEVER lost a Champions League tie after losing the first leg by one goal

  • Atletico Madrid went down 1-0 against Manchester City at the Etihad
  • They trail in the Champions League quarter-final with next game on April 13
  • History shows all is far from lost for Diego Simeone’s determined side
  • They have overturned one-goal deficits against  Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona

Even though the Atletico Madrid dressing room will have been a somber place on Tuesday night, Diego Simeone’s men have reason to be cheerful.

Manchester City, however, will know the Spanish side are a dangerous wounded animal with one particular omen in their favour.

Atletico trail 1-0 going into the Champions League quarter-final second leg but have never lost a tie in the competition when suffering a defeat of that margin.

Diego Simeone’s side have never failed to go through in the Champions League when losing the first leg of a tie by a single goal in the knockout stages

Simeone’s Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 at the Etihad with Manchester City dominating the game

Atletico beat Bayer Leverkusen on penalties back in 2015 having lost the first leg 1-0

Back in 2015, Atletico went down in the away leg against Bayer Leverkusen courtesy of a Hakan Çalhanoğlu strike.

They then won the return by the same scoreline before taking the game to penalties and edging out the Bundesliga outfit 3-2.

The following season, Simeone’s men repeated the trick, this time against Barcelona.

Luis Suarez scored twice for the Catalan side and Fernando Torres ensured the visitors returned to Madrid trailing by just the solitary goal.

In the return, Antoine Griezmann bagged a brace to send Atletico through in dramatic fashion. His 88th minute penalty proved decisive.

Simeone will know that another escape is a tall order against the might of Pep Guardiola’s City.

Kevin de Bruyne has put the Premier League side in control of the tie and they will be desperate to avenge last season’s final defeat by Chelsea.

Reflecting on De Bruyne’s composed finish, manager Guardiola said: ‘He is in the best moment of the season right now.

‘He is sharp, quick and positive. His influence in our game is massive. He scored an exceptional goal from the combination with Phil.’

Guardiola will be under no illusions that the second leg will be a huge challenge
