Repeated Upamecano mistakes highlighted by fans during Liverpool vs RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the last-16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night – and Dayot Upamecano had an evening to forget for the German club.
Second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool ran out comfortable winners in the first leg, which was being played at a neutral venue in Hungary due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.
Jurgen Klopp will be delighted at his side's impeccable display, having come into the game on the back of three straight Premier League defeats.
But the night proved a major disappointment for Leipzig, and in particular for Upamecano.
The 22-year-old defender, who is set to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season, gave away possession far too often at the Puskas Arena and failed to show much of the promise which has made him one of the most sought-after youngsters in European football.
According to stats from WhoScored, he attempted 71 passes on the night, more than any other Leipzig player, and was only successful with 51 of them.
Upamecano was more wasteful on the ball than usual against Liverpool, and fans were quick to point out his mistakes on Twitter.
One wrote: "I’ll be honest I’ve not been overly impressed with Upamecano this game, gave away the ball a few times".
Another asked: "How many times has Upamecano lost possession??"

A third came to this assessment: "Quite the sloppy performance thus far from the highly-rated Upamecano. Consistently giving the ball away cheaply ahead of the Liverpool press, combined with some mental/defensive lapses around his penalty area."
Another put: "Well, my words might come back to haunt me, but Dayot Upamecano is looking sloppy on possession."
While one posted very early into the game: "Upamecano giving the ball away 3 times already Bayern can have him".
