Relegated goalkeeper makes ‘outrageous’ save to deny promotion chasers Stockport

Hartlepool had already been relegated from League Two – but that didn't stop Ben Killip from breaking the hearts of promotion-chasing Stockport.

Killip produced an outrageous save on Monday afternoon when the ball presented itself to Paddy Madden. Killip had to scurry across his goal-line as Madden let fire from point-blank range – expecting to see the net ripple.

However, Killip managed to get his outstretched arms in the way of the shot – keeping the scores level. And football fans have praised the Hartlepool keeper on social media for his efforts to keep his side in the game.

Killip rounded off his display with a penalty save in the 90th minute, and Hartlepool boss John Askey said: "Ben was fantastic. It's been hard for him, he pulled out all the stops and put and himself in the shop window!"

Stockport had arrived in Hartlepool with ambitions of automatic promotion but with their fate out of their hands with Northampton one point ahead in League Two.

Northampton, however, held their nerve as they travelled to Tranmere knowing a win would secure their return to League One. A stunning volley from Sam Hoskins was enough to give the Cobblers a 1-0 win that sent them up to the third tier at the expense of Stockport, who will now face the play-offs
