Ralf Rangnick has revealed how Paul Tierney fired back at his complaints over a foul on Bruno Fernandes during Manchester United's 4-2 win over Leeds.

United got one over on their bitter rivals in a fiesty clash at Elland Road to nudge themselves back into the top four.

Harry Maguire and Fernandes fired United into a two-goal lead at the break before Leeds hit back with two goals in 24 seconds at the start of the second half.

Rangnick sent on Fred and Anthony Elanga after the break and they both found the net to settle an enthralling affair that saw nine yellow cards issued by Tierney.

And after the match, Rangnick opened up on the response he got from Tierney after he quizzed the referee over a challenge on Fernandes in the build-up to Leeds shock equaliser.

Although the United chief was unhappy, Leeds goal stood and helped set up an enthralling finale.

Rangnick said: "I spoke to the referee after the game about that tackle on Bruno before they scored the equaliser and I said, 'listen, in Germany, they wouldn't have even asked VAR' and the referee said to me, quite funnily, 'listen, this is probably why you had to come to England'."

Despite issuing nine cautions, Tierney attempted to let the play flow as much as possible in the abysmal conditions in Yorkshire.

United showed commendable character to rebound after throwing away their two-goal advantage.

And Rangnick was proud of how his side weathered the storm, both figuratively and literally, in the second half.

"It was very intense," said the United chief. "If you were a neutral person, [it was] an entertaining football game, there were only very few moments where nothing happened on the pitch.

"It took us some 10 or 15 minutes to get into the game. I think the last half-hour before half-time we did great, we put them under pressure, we forced them into their half, the whole first-half took place in their half. We were 2-0 up, it could've been 3-0 up, 4-0 up.

"At half-time, we were fully aware they would have a go at us and would try to play with more aggression. I still believe the first goal came out of the blue, I don't think Rodrigo intended to play the ball where he played the ball to, but within two minutes all of a sudden 2-2.

"It took us five minutes to shake ourselves and the reaction after that I think was great, we showed maturity, we showed maturity, as a team on the pitch and in the end we highly deserved to win."
