Reece James breaks silence after fresh injury and admits to ‘toughest year yet’

Reece James has broken his silence since suffering an injury against Bournemouth on Tuesday and has admitted it has been his "toughest year yet".

The Chelsea star was making his competitive return to action after a knee injury he sustained against AC Milan in October. And just 55 minutes into the match against Bournemouth, the defender was down again with a similar problem and could face another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

It already saw the 23-year-old miss out on a spot at the World Cup this winter with England while the year has been plagued with several injuries – including a torn hamstring at the start that saw him sit out over two months.

And James has admitted it has been a tough year after breaking his silence since coming off against Bournemouth in a post on social media. He wrote: "2022 has been the toughest year to date.

"I just wanted to thank you all for the support this year, none of it has gone unnoticed. It’s naturally effected [sic] me mentally, but life is about dealing with the hand you’ve been dealt and that’s what I’m currently tryna do.

"I hope your end of year is filled with peace, joy and happiness. Love you all, catch you next year."

Chelsea boss Graham Potter admitted that he is fearing the worst after James' injury – who was scheduled to be substituted off just five minutes after being forced to. "It's the same area, so we are concerned," the Blues coach said.

"It's really too soon [to tell]. We'll have to see over the next 24-48 hours. He felt something there and we will have to find out the extent of it and keep our fingers crossed.

"He's been really disappointed to miss the World Cup, of course. It was a huge blow to him. You could see today his quality and what he brings to the team. He is a world-class player. You see it from the outside but not until you work with him do you see how good he is.

"He could play in any team in the world, and any team would miss him. The plan was to play 60 minutes today so now he's disappointed, of course."
