'Really hard to find' – Souness says Arsenal have a rare gem in Arteta's side
Graeme Souness heaped praise on Gabriel Martinelli ahead of Arsenal’s win over Leeds… and then watched him score a brace.
The Gunners recorded an impressive 4-1 win over Marcelo Bielsa’s side at Elland Road to ensure they’ll stay fourth heading into Christmas.
Martinelli bagged twice while Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe also found the back of the net, but it was the Brazilian who had everyone talking at full-time.
But Liverpool legend Souness was already hyping up the 20-year-old pre-match.
‘I like him, when I’ve seen him play he looks lively,’ Souness said on Sky Sports before kick-off.
‘He’s dangerous, he’s quick, enthusiastic.
‘He’s a young man who I think will be a star in our football.
‘Goalscorers like him are really hard to find.
‘He’s got a bit of everything about his game and I really like him.’
While Martinelli’s two goals against Leeds took him to four for the season, his strike partner Lacazette fired a blank.
The Frenchman has netted just twice in the league so far this term and has struggled to even find the target at times, something Souness highlighted as a concern.
‘They’ve got a centre-forward who plays there, No.9, Lacazette,’ he said.
‘Six game this year he’s not had a shot. Not a shot… as a centre forward.
‘That’s got to change but Arsenal will point to some performances they’ve been very impressive.
‘But if you go to Liverpool and don’t take part in the game as they did that will tell you how big the gap is.
‘There’s still a lot of work for this Arsenal team.’
Arsenal are next in action against Sunderland on Tuesday nigh in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
