Real Madrid's Benzema and Modric are savaged in L'Equipe ratings

- Real Madrid’s title defence was ended after a 4-0 second leg defeat to Man City

- Five Real Madrid players were awarded 3/10s for their displays at the Etihad
Real Madrid’s Ballon d’Or winners Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have taken the brunt of L’Equipe’s famously brutal player ratings after their Champions League exit to Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The 14-time European champions were outplayed by City at the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola’s side running out as 4-0 winners in the second leg.
Man City’s 5-1 aggregate victory saw the English champions set up a final against Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10.
Modric and Benzema were among the Real stars to receive low scores with the multiple Champions League winners receiving 3/10s from the French newspaper.
Their team-mates Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Rodrygo also received the joint lowest ratings on the night, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois earning the highest for the Spanish giants on 7/10.

Kyle Walker was praised for his one on one defending against Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr
Man City’s Bernardo Silva was unsurprisingly among the highest rated players, with the Portuguese midfielder scoring the opening two goals of the match.
Captain Ilkay Gundogan and Kyle Walker matched Silva in receiving 8/10s for their respective performances in the victory, with Erling Haaland was given City’s lowest mark of 5/10.
Guardiola was awarded the same score for masterminding the dominant win, while Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti received a 4/10.
L’Equipe, explaining their ratings, said that Modric had been ‘eaten by City’s pressing’ during the match but the veteran Croatian’s influence was limited due to Real’s lack of possession in the match.
‘He didn’t exist for a long time, because a player like him can hardly shine in a team that doesn’t touch a ball,’ they wrote.
‘Beaten in the physical impact, he was eaten by City’s pressing and he was never able to enter the game.’
The newspaper said Benzema’s ‘days as a miracle worker’ seem long gone, with the French forward having been ‘physically dominated’ in the tie.
Courtois was praised for limiting the damage for Real Madrid, with L’Equipe noting that the Belgian ‘couldn’t do anything more’ to help his side after producing several impressive saves.

The publication added that Silva had ‘lived one of the greatest evenings of his career’ against Real, with his second goal confirming ‘the compliment of Guardiola, who said he was always present in the big matches’.
Walker’s defending against Real star Vinicius Jr was praised, with the England international having enjoyed similar success against French star Kylian Mbappe.
‘He is definitely the absolute weapon against the two fastest attackers in world football, Mbappé and Vinicius, whom he put in his pocket with his speed and his aggressiveness,’ L’Equipe wrote.
‘He covered, he sprang, he brought the ball out well, and he impelled some actions: huge.’
L’Equipe also reserved praise for Jack Grealish, stating that the England star created danger with his moves, stating that he is ‘not just a big-calf agitator’.
Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri all received 7/10s for their roles in City’s triumph.
