Real Madrid star Toni Kroos believes that the idea of the European Super League still exists and thinks that it will happen eventually.

The ESL was originally announced in April 2021, but due to backlash from fans all over Europe, it was scrapped.

However, there are still murmurs of some people in football wanting it to happen one way or another.

The World Cup winner was recently asked about the ESL and admitted that he does not think the idea has gone away among football’s elite.

He told Marca: ‘Never contradict your own President [Florentino Perez has been a big advocate for the ESL].

‘It is obvious that the idea existed and still exists. It should have been in place a long time ago.

‘I think it will take a while to put it into place and I probably won’t see it as an active player.

‘My opinion is that I continue to believe it will happen, but I cannot say when.’

When the ESL was scrapped there was still an idea that major clubs in Europe were keen to control the money in football rather than UEFA.

Toni Kroos is set to take part in the Champions League for Real Madrid in their campaign opener against Celtic at Celtic Park.
