Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane wants a massive £400,000-a-week in order to join Manchester United, reports claim. The France international is wanted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer amid concerns over Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe. But while his wage is an obstacle, the Red Devils are still optimistic of getting a deal done.
Manchester United have admired Varane for over a decade.
Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the defender when he was at Lens in France, only to end up missing out to Real Madrid instead.
And Jose Mourinho was determined to sign Varane during his time at Old Trafford, with the Frenchman ultimately deciding to stay at the Bernabeu.
Now, however, the situation has changed.
Varane has one year left on his current Real Madrid contract and, despite the La Liga giants wanting to keep the World Cup winner, a parting of the ways appears to be edging closer.
United are ready to resurrect their interest in the 28-year-old as a result and the Independent claim he’s determined to join the Red Devils and hoping to chance his arm in the Premier League next term.

Having won 18 major trophies during his time in Spain, the centre-back feels the time is right to pursue a new challenge.
However, it’s claimed Varane wants a massive salary worth £400,000-a-week from his next club – money that would make him the club’s best-paid player.
United, for their part, are said to be wary of meeting the player’s big financial demand.
They’re still recovering from the Alexis Sanchez debacle, having given the Chile international a similar type of deal upon landing him from Arsenal in January 2018.
Sanchez’s arrival upset many players at the club, most notably Paul Pogba, with many unhappy he was immediately the club’s highest-earner upon touching down.

And the Chile international failed to do the business on the pitch, scoring just five goals before being offloaded to Inter Milan.
To make matters worse, Sanchez then took aim at the Red Devils after his move to the San Siro – boldly revealing he wanted to return to Arsenal after just a single training session.
“I want to tell you about my period at United, about many things that were said and that made me look bad,” he said.
“I got the opportunity to go to United and it seemed tempting to me. It was something nice for me, because, when I was a kid, I liked that club a lot.
“I ended up signing without much information about what was happening in the move. The first days that I was with my colleagues, sometimes there are things that you do not realise until you arrive.
“The first training I had I realised many things. I came home and I told my representative: ‘Can’t the contract be terminated to return to Arsenal?’ They start laughing and I told them that something did not sit right with me. It [the contract] had already been signed.”
Despite that, however, United are still confident of a ‘relatively easy’ deal for the Frenchman.
And, should that happen, he’s poised to partner Harry Maguire in a back four also consisting of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw.
Luke Chadwick has endorsed his old side’s pursuit of Varane, expressing a belief the World Cup winner would be the perfect signing for Solskjaer’s side.
“If you could pick any centre half in the world to go and partner Harry Maguire it would be Varane,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside.
“He’s an absolute Rolls Royce of a player, you don’t win the amount of trophies he’s had without an incredible mentality.
“With Ramos leaving as well, Paris Saint-Germain seem to be showing an interest in both of those players, but in terms of what United need at this time, Varane would be a dream signing if they could get that over the line.
“PSG can offer more in terms of wages, but Varane’s another player who’s never played in the Premier League, so it depends if it’s the financial incentive or that playing opportunity that means more to him.”
As well as Varane, United are also confident of landing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund – with an agreement close.
And Kieran Trippier is also admired.
