Real Madrid’s summer transfer plans could have serious knock-on effects for Manchester United. Real are reportedly resigned to losing Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane in the transfer window and their targets to replace the experienced duo could step on United’s toes.

United are going all out to sign a top-class player this summer to partner Harry Maguire in central defence.

While a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is taking up most of the column inches recently, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also desperate to land a centre-back.

United struggled at the back end of the 2020/21 season, winning just one of their final five games after Maguire went down injured against Aston Villa on May 9.

Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe did not look up to the standard required, with the campaign ending in disappointment as Villarreal won the Europa League final on penalties.

United are known to covet Real defender Varane and are poised to try and sign him for the third time this summer.

Real have offered the 28-year-old a new contract but Varane has reportedly told the club he wants to leave as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal.

Los Blancos want £51.5m (€60m) if they are to sell the Frenchman, but United will face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.

That is because El Confidencial reports that Varane would prefer to move back to his home country after Euro 2020.

PSG hijacking their transfer would be a huge blow for United, who tried to sign Varane in 2011 and 2018, only to be thwarted by Real on both occasions.

Yet the situation could get even worse for Solskjaer, because if Varane leaves alongside the out-of-contract Ramos then the Spanish giants will be in the market for a centre-back themselves.

If Real get the £51.5m they want for Varane, then they will reinvest it in one of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, Villarreal’s Pau Torres or Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte, according to El Confidencial.

Kounde is reportedly Real’s first choice and the Frenchman is keen to move on from Sevilla this summer.

Sevilla director of football Monchi wants £51.5m for Kounde’s signature and will not accept Real midfielder Isco in a player plus money deal.

Torres is valued at £42.9m by Villarreal after their Europa League triumph, while Laporte reportedly wants to move to Madrid after slipping down the pecking order at Man City.

The problem for Manchester United is that both Kounde and Torres have been mooted as transfer alternatives to Varane.

Solskjaer’s side now face the possibility of missing out on Varane to PSG and then one of their second choices to Real.

Sancho may be top of the agenda for United at the moment, but it looks as if they also need to move fast to secure a centre-back.
