  • He has played a key role in the Reds’ recent success under Jurgen Klopp
  • Real Madrid now want the 42-year-old to join them when he departs Anfield
  • Florentino Perez has approached him about heading to Madrid next summer

Real Madrid are reportedly hopeful of luring Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards to the Bernabeu when he waves goodbye to Anfield at the end of the season.

Liverpool confirmed last month that Edwards, who alongside manager Jurgen Klopp has helped guide the Reds back to the top of world football in recent years, is set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract next summer.

The 42-year-old played a key role in the signings of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker in recent years, while he also negotiated Philippe Coutinho’s nine-figure move to Barcelona in 2018.

His transfer dealings have given Klopp the platform to win Premier League and Champions League titles on Merseyside, reestablishing Liverpool as a major force in Europe once more.

And according to The Independent, Madrid want to make Edwards their new sporting director when he leaves Liverpool next year.

Los Blancos president Florentino Perez, who is renowned for splashing the cash on big-name ‘Galactico’ signings, has acknowledged the need to alter their transfer policy amid financial problems off the pitch.

While he remains open to spending big on world-class operators, it is believed Perez is also keen to attract a greater number of up-and-coming stars to the Bernabeu in the same way that Liverpool did with Salah and Sadio Mane.

Real have therefore approached Edwards about joining them ahead of his Anfield departure in 2022, and the club feel optimistic about their chances.

The Reds director was initially linked with a move to Newcastle after announcing his upcoming departure, only for reports to claim he has since rejected the Saudi-backed outfit.

Madrid, however, believe the allure of working in the Spanish capital and revolutionising one of the game’s biggest clubs could be too good to turn down.
