The news will come as a substantial blow for Manchester United – who had just seen Varane return to their squad after recovering from a quad injury.

Varane sustained the injury while away on international duty with France last month and missed out on five of United’s Premier League fixtures as a result.

One of the game he missed included Manchester United’s embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Varane picked up the injury by lengthening his stride to cut out a low cross from Gavi during France’s game against Spain.

It seemed innocuous but the United centre-half signalled towards the bench immediately as he sat on the floor asking for treatment.

The injury came as a substantial blow for Manchester United – considering they paid £40million to attain his services from Real Madrid over summer.

As a result, Varane has made just made just nine appearance for Manchester United so far this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will now face a headache head of Saturday’s home clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford as both Varane and Victor Lindelof could be ruled out

Nevertheless, Varane did return to action for United against Tottenham on the weekend and started their Champions League fixture against Atlanta.

The return of Varane was vital for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considering Victor Lindelof was ruled out injured after picking up as knock in training. Solskjaer was also forced to start Eric Bailly in defence on Tuesday night.
