Manchester United star Raphael Varane's tears of pain will turn into joy following his latest injury update.

Varane left the pitch in a flood of tears after he went off injured in United's 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday evening. The France centre-back received treatment from the club's physios when he fell awkwardly on his leg in the second half of the Premier League clash.

But they weren't able to prevent Varane from having to leave the action overwhelmed with emotion as his World Cup hopes hung by a thread. The competition begins on November 20, and Varane's tearful reaction seemed to confirm he may have to miss the Qatar-held spectactle.

However, Varane's been given a huge boost upon further examination, as French newspaper L'Equipe reported that the thigh injury he sustained will only keep him sidelined for three weeks, which gives him enough time to recover before France's opening game against Australia on November 22.

The 29-year-old's omission from the competition would've been a huge blow for France as they look to retain their World Cup trophy.

The reigning Champions already have to contend with the absences of a slew of stars including N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba. But despite Les Blues' injury-ravaged squad, Lionel Messi still reckons Didier Deschamps side are one of the favourites to lift the golden globe, alongside Brazil, although fans believe it's the Paris Saint-Germain star's destiny to lead Argentina to World Cup glory in what could be his 1,000th career appearance – if his nation reach the final.

However, United will have to do without Varane for two Premier League games, and a couple of Europa League matches ahead of the World Cup. The former Real Madrid international has forged a formidable partnership with new arrival Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the Red Devils' defence this season.

Martinez has already earned a spot in the heart of United faithful following a string of warrior like displays. And the 24-year-old further endeared himself to the Old Trafford fans when he shared a passionate exchange with a supporter following team-mate Casemiro's last-gasp equaliser against the Blues last night.
