Manchester United target Raphael Varane has reportedly had a change of heart over his future this summer, setting his sights on a move away from Real Madrid.

Varane, 28, recently entered the final year of his contract at Madrid, and with little progress being made over an extension he is being tipped to depart the Bernabeu.

United are understood to be targeting a move for the France defender amid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's desire to find a new centre-back partner for captain Harry Maguire.

And according to Spanish outlet AS, Varane is ready to leave Madrid this summer after failing to reach an agreement over a contract extension.

It is believed he initially wanted to stay with Los Blancos, but president Florentino Perez has made it clear that he can't give him the money he wants.

As a result he is prepared to leave the club in the summer transfer window, meaning United are in pole position to prise him away from the Spanish capital.

Real are said to be demanding around £60million for the 2018 World Cup winner, yet United are only willing to fork out £35million to bring him to Old Trafford.

However, former Tottenham star Jamie O'Hara has questioned why Madrid are prepared to let Varane depart the club this summer.

O'Hara said on talkSPORT: “My question would be, why is he leaving Real Madrid?

“Everyone’s making out he’s the best centre-half in the world, so why is he leaving Real Madrid?

“They need a centre-half and if they did get him, it improves the team massively.

“It would be a top signing and it was a position they definitely needed to improve.

“It’s world-class, Varane and Maguire. But I’d worry a little bit potentially for pace. I saw Varane get torn apart by Chelsea in the Champions League.

“Pace would be something that teams would try and exploit against them two.”
