Manchester United defender Raphael Varane left the pitch in tears after suffering an injury in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea. The 29-year-old, United manager Erik ten Hag and his France counterpart Didier Deschamps will fear the worse with less than a month to go until the World Cup.

Varane had produced the latest solid outing of an impressive season so far at Stamford Bridge as he thrives alongside new centre-back partner Lisandro Martinez. But the Frenchman landed awkwardly on his right leg in the 58th minute against Chelsea and looked in great discomfort as he received treatment on the floor.

United’s number 19 accelerated across to the right side of the pitch as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang latched onto a forward pass. But as he lunged forward to tackle Aubameyang, he instantly went to ground in agony as the Chelsea forward whizzed past him down the line.

Concern loomed larger after Varane appeared to be in tears as he stood up and left the pitch, covering his face with his red shirt. And as cameras panned to him walking down the touchline, it was clear the stalwart of Ten Hag’s United was sobbing, likely with the 2022 World Cup at the forefront of his mind.
