Rangnick could yet become Man Utd’s permanent boss with Champions League the key

Mikael Silvestre believes a successful interim tenure as Manchester United manager, particularly in the Champions League, could lead Ralf Rangnick to be handed the keys to Old Trafford full time.

The German coach was announced as the new manager of United until the end of the season. But beyond the summer, the next person in the dugout is a mystery.

Mauricio Pochettino was linked to the permanent position but he has played down the links in press conferences as Paris Saint-Germain boss.

Now former Red Devils player Silvestre has said that it will likely be Rangnick in charge full time come next campaign.

Silvestre, 44, speaking on behalf of 888sport, said: “If I had to bet, I’d say the next permanent manager will be Ralf Rangnick because if it works out well why would the club look elsewhere?

“He’s not young but he has the strength and energy to carry on beyond the next few months. He’s in the best position to take on the job as Manchester United manager.

“He has proven in the past in Germany that his method works and everywhere he’s been his teams have improved.

“His style of football is now the style favoured by teams who do well in the Champions League. If it matches up with the current players at United then they could go a long way.”

Despite a poor start to the season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Untied have forged a way into the knockout stages of the Champions League. They will need to least draw with Swiss outfit Young Boys – who surprisingly beat them 2-1 in the reverse fixture in their Group F opening game – to finish at the top of the table.

Rangnick will take charge of his first game at United against Crystal Palace, with caretaker boss Michael Carrick overseeing Thursday night’s game against Arsenal.
