Ralf Rangnick has hinted that he already 'knows who he wants' to replace him as Manchester United's new boss.

And he's refused to rule out Erik ten Hag, as speculation persists that the Dutchman is Rangnick's top choice for the role.

Rangnick was handed the reins on an interim basis after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was axed back in November.

The German is set to move from the dugout into a two-year consultancy role at the end of the season – meaning he'll have a big say in who succeeds him at Old Trafford.

Rangnick revealed that he's already made his mind up about the vacancy, although he's not yet discussed it with the United hierarchy.

He told Sky Sports: "So far we haven't at all spoken about that, nobody, not just [United football director] John Murtough but nobody else, we haven't had that topic in the last weeks and months since I'm here. I know my opinion [of who should take the job] but so far we haven't spoken about it so this is what I can tell you.

"I don't know him, to start with, as a person. Obviously, I see the development at Ajax since he's been there, I know a little bit about his work when he was with Bayern Munich and that he is one of the top coaches in Europe that's obvious but there are a few other top coaches.

"As I said, we haven't spoken about any new manager so far, therefore we also didn't speak about him."

Ten Hag has earned rave reviews for the job he's overseen at Ajax and recent reports have claimed that United have 'made contact' with his camp.

The 52-year-old has done a stunning job over the past four years in Amsterdam and has hinted this year that he's ready to take the next step in his career by moving overseas.

While ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino have been persistently linked with the top job at Old Trafford, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has emerged as a shock contender for the job.

Hasenhuttl has impressed during his time on the south coast and has worked with Rangnick previously at RB Leipzig.

And The Mirror have revealed that, Murtough and Darren Fletcher have also been impressed by the Austrian.

Hasenhuttl has caught the eye on numerous occasions this term, with Southampton impressing against the top teams; including two draws against Manchester City.
