Rangers are planning to hold talks with other shortlisted candidates after speaking with Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Saturday morning, according to reports. The Scottish outfit have been on the hunt for a new manager since Steven Gerrard left to join Aston Villa, and their shortlist seems to be narrowing as two more potential successors have been ruled out.
Former Rangers star Van Bronckhorst had broadly been seen as the front-runner to take the job, and talks were reportedly held in London on Saturday morning.
While many might have assumed that his appointment was a mere formality, Sky Sports claim that the club will take the weekend to consider a shortlist of alternatives.
It is not yet known whether that decision was taken as a direct result of the talks with Van Bronckhorst, although Rangers are seemingly determined to take their time over making the right choice.
While the Dutchman is certainly still in the running, former Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes and ‘Gers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso are two who are no longer being considered.
Rangers were forced into action when Gerrard’s prospective move to Aston Villa moved quickly after Dean Smith was sacked.
The former Liverpool midfielder joined the club in 2018, leading them to an undefeated Scottish Premiership title last campaign.
Van Bronckhorst is still widely held as the leading candidate to take the reins, given his prior success with Feyenoord before moving to the Chinese Super League.
He was also a successful player at Ibrox, enjoying a three-year spell there at the turn of the millennium before moving on to Arsenal.
He also amassed more than 100 caps for the Netherlands during an illustrious playing career.
