Rangers break another Celtic record after confirming Scottish league title
Rangers have smashed Scottish Premiership records as they secured top spot thanks to Celtic’s draw against Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday.
Steven Gerrard’s side have won 28 of their 32 league fixtures so far this season, drawing the other four matches as they remain unbeaten heading into the final few weeks.
However, it is the calendar date of their triumph that has handed them a record this weekend, beating the date set by sacked boss Lennon’s team back in 2014.
March 7 surpasses the previous March 26 milestone, which was the earliest date top spot had been secured since the current 38 game format came into play.
Interim Celtic boss John Kennedy took the time to praise Rangers following the draw, noting them as worthy champions as the Hoops run of nine consecutive titles came to an end.
He told Sky Sports: "Disappointed. Our objective at the start of the season was to get to 10.
"It hasn't happened for a number of reasons but, ultimately, Rangers have been better than us over the course of the season. Simple as that. They've deserved to win it this year.
“We've just got to accept that and get on with it. I hope it does a lot (in motivating Celtic to bounce back). We've been champions for so long and had so much success. Not just in the league but in the cup competitions. It's about continuing that.”
