Steven Gerrard has hit out at his former rivals Everton and told the Toffees to ‘get real’ over their attempts to sign Rangers defender Nathan Patterson.
The Liverpool icon has fumed over a reported £5million bid for the 19-year-old, who has starred for the Scottish champions during his fledgling senior career.
Patterson has played just 17 times for Rangers but has already made his senior Scotland debut and was a member of their Euro 2020 squad.
Gerrard insisted that he had only heard about the rumour just after his side defeated Ross County in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday but branded the offer a ‘joke’.
Patterson was on the bench for the 4-2 win and has failed to make a league appearance this term.

“You carry on with the jokes – £5m, wow,” Gerrard sighed after his side’s victory, with the Daily Record claiming that the bid has been turned down.
“Look, I’ve only just been told about this.
“£5m is, I don’t know, that’s definitely come out of a joke book surely. I don’t make the decisions in terms of when the right numbers are hit.
“All the players have got a price, we’ve said this so many times. We want to keep all our best players, especially our homegrown and local ones.

“There’s a big future here for Nathan. He’s got to be patient and he’ll get game time and minutes.
“We’re delighted with him, he’s not someone we’re looking to move on but every single person has got a number. But let me tell you now, £5m is so far away it’s unreal.”
Everton made the controversial choice to appoint Gerrard’s former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez earlier this summer after Carlo Ancelotti took the vacant Real Madrid job.
The Spaniard is moving closer to winning over fans following an unbeaten start to the 2021-22 campaign.
Goals by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray helped the Merseysiders draw 2-2 with Leeds United in an entertaining clash at Elland Road.
Winger Gray is one of several forays into the transfer market by Benitez during his first transfer window as Everton head coach.
The 24-year-old has been signed in a bargain £1.5m deal from Bayern Leverkusen, only eight months after he joined the Bundesliga side in a similar transfer from Leicester City.
Andros Townsend, Asmir Begovic and Andy Lonergan have also arrived on free transfers after their contracts expired at their previous clubs.
The Daily Record continue that Everton’s interest in Patterson is not expected to materialise if their advances are turned down. They will instead turn to more experienced targets to fill their right-back position.
