Ralf Rangnick will not take charge of Manchester United against Arsenal

Ralf Rangnick will not take charge of Manchester United when they take on Arsenal in the Premeir League on Thursday, with visa and Covid protocols slowing down the handover.

The 63-year-old was announced as the Red Devils’ new interim manager on Monday, taking over until the end of the season when he will then start a two-year consultancy role.

However, he will have to wait to get his hands on the first team and will not be in charge when the Gunners come to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The BBC report that the visa and Covid processes will not be complete in time for Rangnick to lead the team, meaning caretaker boss Michael Carrick will continue to lead the team.

Carrick has enjoyed his short spell in charge of the team so far, winning away at Villarreal in the Champions League last Tuesday and then picking up a creditable draw at Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

He will likely have just one more game as short-term boss and it is a big one against Arsenal as the two teams are in the race for the top four.

The Gunners’ victory over Newcastle on Saturday sees them sitting fifth in the Premier League, only behind West Ham in fourth on goal difference.

Untied are down in eighth and five points behind Mikel Arteta’s side but can gain significant ground on them if Carrick can pick up his first Premier League win as a manager on Thursday.

Rangnick’s first game in charge will likely be the clash with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
