Ralf Rangnick ‘will adapt’ to use Raul tactic with Cristiano Ronaldo at Man Utd
Rio Ferdinand believes Ralf Rangnick will adapt his tactics to fit Cristiano Ronaldo into his Manchester United side.
Rangnick has brought to Old Trafford what United have been severely lacking this season – a clear identity and style of play.
The German coach's 'gegenpress' was in full flow during his Premier League managerial debut against Crystal Palace – a system which was feared wouldn't suit the 36 years old Ronaldo.
However, the Red Devils legend seemed to buy into Rangnick's philosophy, much to the surprise of those fans watching.
And Rangnick, who expressed how crucial Ronaldo would be upon his arrival, will use an old trick to make sure he fits in, according to Ferdinand.
"I think he’ll be adapting his tactics to suit a style like Cristiano Ronaldo," the former United defender said on BT Sport.
"Don’t forget at Schalke he had an ageing superstar in Raul and he adapted so he could make sure he can accommodate a player of that calibre and that class.
"When you’re scoring the goals that he does, as decisive as he is, you have to sometimes change and adapt for people like that."
Should Rangnick have to adapt for Ronaldo? Let us know in the comments section.
Rangnick was only at Schalke for six months while Raul was there, which was his second spell in charge of the Bundesliga club.
He had to step down in September 2011 due to chronic fatigue syndrome after joining in March.
Despite the spell being brief, it was also fruitful, with Rangnick's side defeating Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter finals thanks to three Raul goals before being dumped out by United.
He also led them to victory in the German Super Cup final.
The 63-year-old was complimentary of Ronaldo's workrate against Palace.
He said: “We wanted to play with two strikers, especially in the central position. By the way, Cristiano Ronaldo's work off the ball – chapeau.”
And after the display Ferdinand feels Rangnick's belief in Ronaldo will be reciprocated.
He added: “We watched the game at the weekend and there was a big difference in the way the team was set-up – the shape, the way they pressed.
“I think Ronaldo will buy into that completely as he wants to be successful."
