Ralf Rangnick was less than pleased with his starlets against Young Boys in the Champions League. Manchester United mustered a 1-1 draw, though they still emerged group winners.

United interim manager Rangnick took aim at his youngsters on Wednesday night after criticising their passing.

The Red Devils could only manage a 1-1 draw against Swiss side Young Boys, who had earlier beat them in the corresponding fixture.

Mason Greenwood got the Old Trafford crowd out of their seats with a beautiful strike, a sideways bicycle kick that exhibited all the fine finishing skills the 20-year-old possesses.

But despite the brilliant start, United withdrew and a mistake from Donny van de Beek allowed Fabian Rieder to curl in an absolute stunner that left Dean Henderson with no chance.

United fielded a number of fringe players such as Juan Mata and Eric Bailly while the likes of Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage made their first-team debuts after being promoted from the academy for the night.

However, the home side could not claim the victory – though the result does still mean they finish top of the group stage.

Rangnick was less than pleased, though, saying: “There was game time for players who desperately need it.

“We played too many balls into the first line of their press. Whenever we played the ball into the second or third line, we were dangerous.

“I told them that before the game but they still played that five metre pass as a pressing invitation.”

In another interview, the German coach went into more detail over why he was not happy with the result or the performance.

He said: “I was fully aware before the game with this team we played today they haven’t played together, not only with regard to formation.

“But also as a team the first half hour we did okay, we had a few unforced errors but at least we had control of the game.

“We should’ve been minimum 2-0 if not 3-0 up we had two great opportunities one from Amad and the other from Mata, but we didn’t score we were a bit sloppy with those situations.

“We had a third one with Elanga so we could of scored 3 or 4 goals but we conceded the equaliser and we were not defending high enough not proactive enough and we could of also conceded more goals.

“So in the end if the score ended 3-3 or 4-3 nobody could’ve complained but as I said also the good things quite a few debuts game time for players who desperately needed game time so in total I wouldn’t say I’m happy but it was okay.”
