Ralf Rangnick responds to Erling Haaland transfer link with Man Utd
Ralf Rangnick has denied reports claiming that he would receive a bonus if he signed Erling Haaland for Manchester United and has played down talk of a move for the Borussia Dortmund striker.
Haaland is set to be one of the most in-demand players next summer as he has a release clause in his contract with Dortmund which could allow him to leave for a minimum of £63 million.
Rangnick has already been linked with a move for Haaland after agreeing to become United’s interim manager until the end of the season.
Reports in Germany this week claimed the 63-year-old would receive a €10m (£8.5m) bonus if he managed to convince Haaland to make the move to Old Trafford.
But Rangnick has denied such a clause exists in his deal with United and says he is already well stocked with attacking options.
When asked directly about the reported Haaland-related bonus in his contract, Rangnick joked: ‘Let me have a look… £10 million for Erling Haaland, £10m for Kylian Mbappe, £10m for Robert Lewandowski, £10m for Joshua Kimmich… this is nonsense obviously, there are no such clauses in my contract.
‘As I said, it doesn’t make sense now to have any sort of speculation on possible new players.
‘Erling Haaland is a fantastic striker. I know best myself because I was together with the people at Salzburg at the time with my friend Christoph Freund [Salzburg’s sporting director] and the people there, I was also a little bit involved in the move from Molde to Salzburg.
‘Therefore I know what kind of player he is. In the meantime the whole world has realised how good the player he is. Two years ago it was only very few people who probably believed in this kind of development.
‘As I said, it doesn’t make sense. I’m more than happy [with the squad]. The offensive strike power we have here, all of the offensive players we have here, quite a few of them didn’t play yesterday [against Arsenal] – Martial only came on in the last five minutes, Mason [Greenwood] didn’t play at all. We have so many top players in the offensive department that we don’t need to speak about any other players.’
