Ralf Rangnick gives verdict on Man Utd's win over Arsenal
Ralf Rangnick says Manchester United’s topsy-turvy 3-2 win over Arsenal could’ve gone any way but the Red Devils’ new interim boss insists he is happy with the result.
United came from behind to beat the Gunners at Old Trafford, with Rangnick watching on from the stands as caretaker manager Michael Carrick took charge for the third and final time.
After Emile Smith Rowe’s controversial opener in the 13th minute, United hit back through Bruno Fernandes to level the scoring.
Carrick’s side then took the lead when Cristiano Ronaldo swept home from Marcus Rashford’s cutback, but Martin Odegaard equalised for Arsenal just minutes later.
In more dramatic fashion, Martin Atkinson awarded the Gunners a penalty after a VAR review on Odegaard’s challenge on Fred in the box, and Ronaldo dispatched the spot-kick from 12 yards with aplomb to win the game.
As he prepares to take charge for the first time against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Rangnick gave his thoughts on a ‘shaky’ first half and the potential of his new team.
‘Yesterday in the box, I felt with Michael [Carrick], Kieran [McKenna], until the final whistle it could have been 4-2, 3-3.’ Rangnick told reporters on Friday.
‘This is the exciting thing about football, but as a coach you don’t want football games to develop that way that anything can happen at any time.
‘In the end, I was more than happy we got the result we all wanted.’
‘All of you saw the game,’ the 63-year-old added. ‘The first half was shaky with this unlucky goal. Even myself, I said where is David [De Gea]?
‘After that goal, it was a major blow for the team, they were lacking confidence. Which is normal after the recent weeks.
‘It was important to get the equaliser before halftime.
‘You could see the potential that was in the team. To transfer the game away from our own box into an area where we have our assets.’
