Ralf Rangnick apologised to Manchester United’s supporters after the ‘humiliating’ 4-0 defeat that finally killed off their chances of finishing in the top four.

United were woeful in falling to a fifth straight away loss, with Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard all scoring as travelling fans chanted: ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt.’

Rangnick, who later confirmed it was the second worst defeat of his coaching career, said: ‘It is important to apologise to our supporters. They came all the way from Manchester and we just weren’t good enough.

Saturday’s loss has condemned United to their worst point tally in the Premier League era

‘It was not only poor, it was extremely poor. At half-time the only good thing is it was only 1-0.

‘We just weren’t good enough in defending as a team and we didn’t create enough chances.

‘I remember watching Watford away (a 4-1 defeat) and this looked similar. If you play good teams and do not defend properly, this is the result. It was a humiliating defeat and the second highest defeat in my career as a coach. It is not only the 4-0 it is how we played.

Brighton boss Graham Potter says the win against united is one of his best as a manager

‘Responsibility is on my side for the performance, it is difficult to explain. That felt terrible for everyone.’

Graham Potter, who is being considered by Tottenham as a possible replacement for Antonio Conte if the Italian chooses to leave in the summer, said: ‘It is up there (with the best wins of his career). ‘We have had to suffer a bit at home to say the least (after going eight without a home win) but I think we made up for it today in some ways. It was a great performance and a fantastic result. Today was special.

‘We were a little unfortunate not to add to the four. We have had really good performances and not turned a point into three and it is probably why we are where we are. This is a nice reward after enduring a bit of suffering.’
