Rafael van der Vaart claims United's Antony 'hasn't done much'
‘He’s a good player, who hasn’t proven anything!’: Rafael van der Vaart SLAMS Man United’s Antony and claims the winger ‘hasn’t done much’ since his £85.5m move to England… as pundit urges Brazilian to be ‘like Marcus Rashford’
- The ex-Spurs star slammed the Brazilian’s performances for Manchester United
- The winger has scored just three league goals since his £85.5million move
- Van der Vaart urged Antony to take inspiration from his team-mate Rashford
Retired star Rafael van der Vaart has claimed that Man United’s Antony ‘hasn’t proven anything’ at the club and urged the winger to be more ‘like Marcus Rashford’.
The Brazilian international secured an £85.5million move to Old Trafford from Ajax in the summer and was reunited with former boss Erik ten Hag – who had just joined United.
However, things haven’t quite gone to plan for the 22-year-old and he’s now been encouraged to be ‘humble’ on the pitch, in a bid to find his best form.
Manchester United winger Antony has received criticism over his recent performances
Retired star Rafael van der Vaart ripped into the forward and said he ‘hasn’t done much’
The ex-Spurs midfielder told Ziggo Sports (via the Manchester Evening News): ‘Do you know what it is with Antony… He is of course a great talent and a great player, but he shouldn’t believe in himself very much. He’s just a good player, who hasn’t proven anything yet.
‘He has played some good Champions League games, he’s come in reasonably well with the Brazil national team a few times, he’s made a big move and hasn’t done much at Manchester United yet. He shouldn’t think: “I’ve made it and I’m going to show it to the whole world by doing crazy things”.
‘No, he has to decide games, like Marcus Rashford is doing now. Then you can do something crazy for once. But he has to be very humble, try really hard and shoot or pass those balls in.’
Antony has scored just three league goals since signing for £85.5million in the summer
There had been high expectations for the winger upon his arrival from Ajax but he’s failed to live up to the mark after notching just three league goals in the campaign.
Meanwhile, his team-mate Rashford, is in the form of his life and has helped inspire Man United’s terrific domestic form with nine goals in his last 10 games.
Things went from bad to worse for Antony after he ruthlessly mocked by supporters on social media after his attempted skill went wrong against Reading.
Van der Vaart insisted that the Brazilian should take inspiration from Marcus Rashford
The Brazilian was up against Chelsea loanee Baba Rahman on the right wing as he looked to find a way into the box.
After a few feints, he attempted to breeze past the defender but instead lost his footing, allowing Rahman to snuff out the danger.
It is not the first time Antony has been mocked for a failed piece of skill. He was heavily criticised last year after showing off his trademark spin while in acres of space in a Europa League tie against Sheriff Tiraspol.
