Rachel Riley threatens to quit being Man Utd fan if Mason Greenwood returns

Rachel Riley has vowed to stop supporting Manchester United if the club sanctions Mason Greenwood’s return this season. The Countdown co-presenter is one of the latest high-profile names to speak out on the ever-developing situation as United prepare to announce a decision on Greenwood’s future.

According to reports, Red Devils chief executive Richard Arnold told club figures that he planned to green-light the 21-year-old’s reintegration at the start of the month before delaying going public.

But on Wednesday, United confirmed in a statement that the club’s investigation into his future was in the final stages, although a decision had yet been made.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after allegations surfaced on social media, and in October of that year, he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The United No 11 denied all the allegations against him, and the charges were dropped in February of this year, allowing the club to start their probe into his future.

Riley, responding to a fellow United supporter named Em, took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to Greenwood’s potential return, claiming it would force her to walk away from the club.

“I’m with Em. I won’t be able to support United if Greenwood remains at the club,” Riley told her 684,000 followers.

“We’ve all seen and heard enough. Pretending this is OK would be a huge part of the problem.

“It would be devastating for my club to contribute to a culture that brushes this under the carpet … I really hope they do the right thing.”

A small group of predominantly female United fans protested in opposition to Greenwood’s return before Monday’s Premier League opener against Wolves.

United were unconvincing in a toothless attacking display, riding their luck to win 1-0 through Raphael Varane’s second-half header.

Erik ten Hag and most of his dressing room are reportedly open to the prospect of Greenwood re-entering the frame after almost two years.

The Dutchman is said to want a second forward this summer after signing Rasmus Hojlund in a £73million deal from Atalanta.

And he could view Greenwood as an internal solution to his continued attacking woes after Marcus Rashford carried the goalscoring burden last season, netting 30 times.

But the resistance against Greenwood’s return across social media and at Old Trafford may have prompted Arnold’s delayed announcement. And while it isn’t public, it’s a decision that may change.
