Qatar 2022 voted ‘greatest World Cup of 21st century’ – and fans are suspicious

The Qatar World Cup has been voted the greatest one of the 21st century – but fans aren't buying it.

The World Cup was held in the Middle East for the first time in November amid a flurry of objections from the biggest names in the sport. Concerns over human and worker rights, along with Qatar's controversial stance on the LGBTQ+ community led to calls for the country to lose its hosting rights.

But after hosting a thrilling tournament that saw small nations like South Korea and Morocco reach the knockout stages for the first time, plus Lionel Messi ''complete football' by lifting the World Cup with Argentina following an enthralling final against losers France, BBC viewers have voted the Qatar spectacle the best World Cup ever in this century.

A staggering 78% of spectators picked Qatar as their No1 host of the tournament, way ahead of Japan and South Korea in second place, who 6% of fans voted for after the Asian nations held the World Cup in 2002.

Brazil occupied third place with 5% following their hosting of the tournament in 2014. While Germany and Russia both attained 4% of the vote, after holding the competition in 2006 and 2018 respectively.

However, supporters weren't impressed by the poll and took to Twitter to express their grievances with the statistics.

One fan debated: "Pure recency bias and rose-tinted goggles, after the first set of games people were saying it was the worst world cup ever, if Croatia beat the Argies literally no one on earth would've cared about the final."

And another slammed the poll as 'fake news', whilst insisting South Africa's tournament was the best, they raged: "We just forget 2010 even happened? Fake news!!"

A third fan felt the same and added: "2010 World Cup in South Africa was by far the best ever."

And a slew of other supporters put the outcome of the vote down to "recency bias."

However, BBC viewers aren't alone in their opinion, as Fifa president Gianni Infantino also insisted the Qatar World Cup was the best one ever.
