Both players are key men at PSV but look set to leave the club this summer after good seasons

Malen lashed in 27 goals for PSV last season while Dumfries was a mainstay at right-back but Schmidt – a former Bayer Leverkusen boss – expects to lose the talents this summer.

‘I no longer expect them to return to De Herdgang (PSV’s training ground),’ Schmidt told Algemeen Dagblad.

‘It was already clear after last season that they wanted to take a step abroad. I still expect that.

‘If there is no transfer, we will look at it again. It will be a challenge in terms of fitness. That goes for Dumfries and Malen, but also for Cody Gakpo.

Dumfries bagged goals against Ukraine and Austria, putting himself on a few club’s wish lists

‘They will only join later and will now have to stay fit individually. It would of course be good for us if they are there, then we have more options.’

Malen had spells in Ajax and Arsenal’s academy before graduating from PSV’s under-21 side into the senior game, and has become the latest high-scoring young forward to be nurtured in the Eredivisie.

Dumfries, who captains PSV at 25-years-old, scored against Ukraine and Austria at the Euros and could be in demand with wing-backs becoming increasingly crucial at club level.
