PSG forward Neymar is set to miss the rest of the season as he prepares to undergo surgery on his right ankle.
The 31-year-old suffered the injury last month, and has been seen using crutches since. He will now have an operation that is set to keep him out of action for 3-4 months.
PSG confirmed the news in a statement on their club website on Monday afternoon.
The statement read: ‘Neymar Jr has had several episodes of right ankle instability in recent years. Following his last sprain contracted on February 20, the medical staff of Paris Saint-Germain recommended a ligament repair operation, in order to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All of the experts consulted confirmed this need.
‘This surgery will be performed in the coming days at ASPETAR Hospital in Doha.
Brazilian forward Neymar injured his ankle in PSG’s league match with Lille last month
He had to be stretchered off the pitch and is now set to have an operation on his ankle
Neymar is set to miss the rest of the season due to the operation on his right ankle
‘A delay of 3 to 4 months is expected before his return to collective training.’
With the season due to end in less than three months, it appears that Neymar’s season is over.
Should he miss the remainder of the campaign, this could mean he has played his final game for PSG, amid reports that he could be sold by the French giants this summer.
The Brazilian was linked with a move away last summer following a disappointing campaign that saw the team eliminated at the last-16 stage of the Champions League under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, he opted to stay and has flourished this season with Christophe Galtier in the dugout, registering 13 goals and 11 assists in 20 Ligue 1 appearances.
But he went over on his ankle in his side’s 4-3 win against Lille in February, and had to be stretchered from the pitch.
Galtier recently ruled him out of PSG’s return leg against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, but it has now emerged that the issue is even more serious than first thought and requires surgery.
Rumours regarding Neymar’s future have not gone away, and his father only added to the speculation when he claimed it was ‘entirely possible’ that his son would return to Brazil to play for Flamengo before backtracking during a podcast appearance in January.
Neymar’s deal at PSG is due to run until 2025, and has an option of a further 12 months for the player, but it is possible that he could bring his six-year association with the club to an end this summer.
