PSG ‘discussing hiring Steven Gerrard’ but fans adamant they’re ‘on the wind up’

Steven Gerrard could reportedly be in line for a return to management with Paris Saint-Germain – and fans can't quite believe it.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has been out of work since being sacked by Aston Villa in October. The 42-year-old managed only 13 wins from 40 games in charge during an 11-month spell at Villa Park, having joined the club from Rangers in 2021.

The context of his dismissal – with the Villans hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone – left many wondering where Gerrard might go next. Few would have had Paris as his next stop, but reports have now emerged linking the former England star to the job in the French capital.

According to Scottish Daily Express Sport, the former Rangers manager has been discussed as a possible option by the PSG hierarchy who are becoming frustrated with Christophe Galtier.

Galtier, who only joined the club in the summer as a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino, has the Parisians top of Ligue 1 and well on course to win their ninth title in 11 seasons.

However, they were knocked out of the French Cup by Marseille and made a meal of last weekend's match against Lille, with Lionel Messi getting them out of trouble deep in injury time.

The report adds that the club's Qatari owners are interested in Gerrard, seeing him as a high profile figure from the world of football who could improve and enhance them next season.

If true, it would represent a remarkable turnaround for Gerrard, whose stock is currently at the lowest its been since he took his first steps into management with Rangers.

Needless to say, football fans up and down the land couldn't quite believe what they were reading. One wrote: "I love Stevie G but surely this is a wind up." Someone else said: "Guess I am as well at this rate."

A third person commented: "Next thing you know Steve Bruce is a key target for Real Madrid." A fourth made a cheeky jibe around Gerrard's iconic slip against Chelsea, writing: "PSG are gonna slip up in the Champions League again…"

However, even if the reports prove accurate, the former Villa boss might face competition for the role. It has also been claimed that PSG could be open to reappointing Thomas Tuchel, despite the German being ousted from Parc des Princes in December 2020.
