Liverpool and Chelsea are set to see their matches this weekend go ahead as the Premier League fights back against the latest coronavirus outbreaks. The title contenders were both in action in midweek, while other rivals had their games postponed.

The Premier League season has descended into utter chaos as the new Omicron variant has ripped through players and staff at clubs around the country.

Three games were cancelled in midweek, with Manchester United’s trip to Brentford among the casualties.

Five of this weekend’s games have already been canned, with United set to miss out once again, while fellow top-four hopefuls West Ham have seen their game with Norwich fall by the wayside.

But Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham is scheduled to go ahead, as is Chelsea’s visit to Wolves.

The title-chasers were both missing a number of key players in midweek due to a coronavirus outbreak.

But, according to The Sun, they will both be in action unless their training grounds are forced to close or the pandemic leaves either side unable to field 14 fit players.

“The League understands fans will be disappointed these games have had to be postponed and apologises for the inconvenience and disruption caused,” said a Premier League spokesman in response to the latest cancellations.

“All other fixtures due to be played this weekend are currently scheduled to proceed as planned.”

The Premier League has been implored to halt matches and apply a ‘circuit breaker’ to give clubs an opportunity to deep clean their facilities and get players fit again.

A virtual meeting has been called for Monday for all Premier League clubs to discuss an action plan for the festive period.

But league bosses are determined to keep the show on the road during what is traditionally one of the most exhilarating times of the season.

That means Boxing Day fixtures and subsequent matches are set to go ahead.

Following his side’s victory over Newcastle on Thursday evening, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted he is focusing on ensuring his players are ready to play.

“I saw Everton’s line-up [against Chelsea] and didn’t know three or four of their players so they obviously have massive problems there,” Klopp said.

“They played and got a point so big respect there.

“We all try to play the games but not everything is in our hands so we just have to respect the decisions other people make.

“As long as we’re told differently we will try everything to play all the games.”
