Premier League players to pay tribute to Israel-Gaza victims next weekend

The Premier League has confirmed plans to pay tribute to victims of the war between Israel and Hamas next weekend. At least four thousand people are reported to have been killed in this week’s conflict prompted by Hamas’s air strikes on Saturday.

Government officials have asked sporting authorities to “appropriately” reflect on the conflict. There is long-standing tension in the region and football will pay tribute to those who have lost their lives during this week’s escalation.

Players, managers and match officials will wear black armbands and conduct a moment’s silence in the Premier League’s next round of fixtures. Domestic football returns on Saturday, October 21 following the international break.

A statement read: “The Premier League is shocked and saddened by the escalating crisis in Israel and Gaza, and strongly condemns the horrific and brutal acts of violence against innocent civilians.

“We hope for peace, and our heartfelt sympathies are with the victims, their families and the communities impacted.

“As a mark of respect for all those affected, Premier League players, managers and match officials will wear black armbands and observe a moment’s silence at the fixtures taking place from Saturday 21 to Monday 23 October. The League will also make a donation to the British Red Cross to support the aid efforts helping those in urgent need.”

It comes after the FA announced a similar tribute to take place during England’s friendly with Australia on Friday. The governing body said: “On Friday evening, we will remember the innocent victims of the devastating events in Israel and Palestine.

“Our thoughts are with them, and their families and friends in England and Australia and with all the communities who are affected by this ongoing conflict. We stand for humanity and an end to the death, violence, fear and suffering.

“England and Australia players will wear black armbands during their match at Wembley Stadium and there will also be a period of silence held before kick-off.

“Following discussions with partners and external stakeholders, we will only permit flags, replica kits and other representations of nationality for the competing nations inside Wembley Stadium for the upcoming matches against Australia (October 13) and Italy (October 17).

“The British Red Cross have also launched an emergency appeal to support the people affected by the humanitarian crisis in the region, and we will promote this appeal within the stadium on Friday.”
