Premier League games will be shown on TNT Sports from NEXT season… with the new channel set to take over BT Sport’s existing portfolio of live rights after £650m merger with Warner Brothers Discovery
- Premier League matches will be broadcast on a new channel called TNT Sports
- This will begin next season and cover two years of the current broadcast deal
- TNT Sports will take over BT Sport’s full existing portfolio of live sporting rights
Premier League matches will be broadcast live on a new channel called TNT Sports next season. Sportsmail revealed yesterday that BT Sport would be changing its name following last year’s £650million merger with Warner Brothers Discovery, who will relaunch the channel next season with a homage to American cable station Turner Network Television.
TNT Sports will take over BT’s existing portfolio of live rights, which includes two more seasons of Premier League matches, the next four years of Champions League fixtures and Premiership Rugby. Warner Brothers Discovery also own Eurosport, which will continue to operate as a stand-alone channel in the UK until the 2024 Olympics, after which it will be rolled into the TNT stable.
TNT are planning to run four sports channels from July and are planning to fight hard to retain Premier League rights when the current contract expires in 2025. The auction for the next rights cycle will take place in the next 12 months, with new players such as Apple TV and DAZN expected to join Sky Sports and TNT in bidding for matches. TNT already broadcast football in south America as well as basketball and ice hockey in the United States.
“On the next rights auction this is a premium service and our intention is to remain a premium service,” said Warner Bros managing director Andrew Georgiou. “Our approach to any rights auction is to make sure we maintain that position in the market.
“Today is another important step towards the launch of a simpler and even more compelling offering for sports fans in the U.K & Ireland. The TNT Sports name is already synonymous with premium live sport in a number of countries around the world and a further sign of the global scale and expertise that Warner Bros. Discovery brings to its partnership with BT.”
