Graham Potter believes Brighton are ready to go stop being perennial relegation strugglers and joining today’s opponents Arsenal as a top Premier League team.

Potter has steered Brighton to safety with increasing assurance after two years in charge, but survival is not the name of the game for the ambitious coach who turned 46 at the end of last week.

He said: ‘The stretch goal is to establish us as a top 10 club.

Brighton have impressed many with their performances over the course of this season

‘It’s not necessarily about being a top 10 team because you can be a top 10 team and then get relegated the next year.

‘It’s about sustainable improvement, improvement at a level that means we are consistently in the top 10 of the Premier League.’

But he warned Brighton supporters not to expect a West Ham style transformation and be challenging for Europe this time next year.

He added: ‘Everything takes time. Football is determined by finance. 95% of the leagues are determined by finance, so you have to decide ‘okay if you want to be that 5% that breaks the system, how do you do it?’

‘Maybe I’m a bit of a romantic about that, but that’s what I believe and that’s why I’m doing the job. Anything is possible in football.

‘You must dream and you think be able to say ‘we could be one of that 5% and we can have ambition, why not?

‘Money doesn’t necessarily guarantee everything. We’ve taken points from Manchester City from Tottenham from Arsenal from the teams that historically are not so easy to beat.

‘All we have to do is keep improving so that we can get a consistent level of results. That’s the bit a little bit missing at the moment.’
