Portugal are reportedly eyeing Jose Mourinho as their next manager, with current boss Fernando Santos said to be close to stepping down from the job in the wake of his team’s World Cup exit at the hands of Morocco. Mourinho is currently in charge of Serie A giants Roma but could juggle two jobs if he takes charge of the national team.

Portugal stormed into the knockout stages of the World Cup after defeating Ghana and Uruguay in their opening two matches in Qatar. And despite losing to South Korea in their final group game, the team won Group H to set-up a last 16 showdown with Switzerland.

Santos’ side were in imperious form against their European rivals as they cruised to a 6-1 victory with the help of a hat-trick from Goncalo Ramos. And they were tipped by some to go all the way after being drawn to face Morocco in the quarter-finals.

But Portugal never really got going in their last eight showdown and were dumped out of the competition after losing the match 1-0.

Santos led Portugal to the Euro 2016 title after his country saw off France in the final. But after more than eight years at the helm, his time in charge appears to be coming to an end. According to Corriere dello Sport, Portugal now want to turn to Mourinho to oversee the team. The ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager is said to be interested in the role and could decide to combine it with his current one if he is appointed.

Mourinho took charge of Roma last July after being sacked by Spurs two-and-a-half months earlier. And he led the Italian club to the Europa Conference League title during his maiden campaign in Italy. The 59-year-old has struggled to make an impact domestically, however, with Roma only finishing sixth in the Serie A table last season. And they are currently seventh in the table this term.

Mourinho announced his arrival on the big stage after leading Porto to the Champions League trophy against all the odds in 2004. He then took charge of Chelsea and guided the Blues to two Premier League titles, before lifting two Serie A trophies and the Champions League with Inter Milan.

He won the La Liga title once during a three-year spell with Real Madrid but failed to secure his third Champions League while at the Bernabeu Stadium. And despite winning the Premier League once again with Chelsea in 2015, he has struggled to have the same impact he one had on teams in recent years.

The marmite figure was sacked by Chelsea and then survived only two-and-a-half years at the Red Devils before being axed. And he was also given his marching orders after less than 18 months at Tottenham.
