Pontus Jansson says he has taken Marcelo Bielsa's 'ideas' to Brentford

Pontus Jansson insists he is ‘so thankful’ to Marcelo Bielsa and reveals he has taken the Leeds boss’ ‘ideas and knowledge’ to Brentford as he claims they still have a good relationship despite acrimonious Elland Road exit

  • Jansson left Leeds in July 2019, before the season Bielsa’s side were promoted
  • But the Swede insists his relationship with the Argentine manager is still strong
  • And Jansson stated some of Bielsa’s tactical innovations helped the Bees go up
  • Jansson captained Thomas Frank’s team to victory in Saturday’s play-off final

Pontus Jansson has revealed he has brought several tactical ideas from Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side to Brentford after their promotion to the Premier League.

Bees captain Jansson signed for Thomas Frank’s outfit after being told he was no longer wanted by Bielsa’s Leeds, but the 30-year-old also insisted his relationship with the innovative Argentine was still strong despite his acrimonious exit.

And when asked whether the promotion justified his transfer from Leeds to West London, the Swede responded positively.

Brentford’s Pontus Jansson revealed he has taken ‘ideas and knowledge’ from Marcelo Bielsa

Bielsa previously managed the defender at Leeds before the Swede left acrimoniously in 2019

He said after the match: ‘That’s probably what makes me proudest. I saw something in Brentford.

‘I’m so thankful to (Marcelo) Bielsa and what he gave me at Leeds, he gave me so much knowledge that I actually brought in here to Brentford.

‘Brentford were so willing to listen to me, with my ideas that I took from Bielsa, so I thank him a lot!

Jansson insisted the relationship between Bielsa and himself was strong despite his departure

The 30-year-old captained the Bees to promotion in Saturday’s play-off final against Swansea

‘Bielsa for me is one of the best coaches in the world. People think my and his relationship is not the best but it is, he’s very good. I’m so thankful to him and of course I love Brentford so much, but also thanks to Bielsa and Leeds.’

The Bees, appearing in their second successive Championship play-off final, put last year’s loss against Fulham behind them with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Swansea at Wembley on Saturday.

That victory means Jansson will have the chance to face the side and the manager that let him go in the English top-flight next season.
