Wayne Rooney has officially alleged he was blackmailed after photos of him with semi-naked women surfaced online.
Cheshire Police confirmed the complaint to Daily Star Sport and said they are investigating the incident.
A spokesperson said: "We have received a complaint of blackmail which we are reviewing."
The Derby boss appears to be asleep, fully clothed, in one image as semi-naked women pose next to him.
There is no suggestion the three women photographed with him have been accused of blackmail.
In footage released, Rooney is pictured walking alongside the women on the way to the hotel.
It is understood the snaps were taken at Chinawhite nightclub, Manchester, before moving to the hotel.
The images that were shared appear to show Rooney gradually falling asleep, with one captioned: "Sleepy Wayne."
Other images appeared to show Rooney asleep on a chair in the hotel room.
There was some confusion after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed they had received no complaint from Rooney.
But Rooney's representative said it had been passed to the British Transport Police, who said the case was being handled by Cheshire Police.
The mum of one of the girls involved told The Sun: "The poor girls were just going out for a 21st birthday.
“They’re 21 and he’s nearly 40. He’s invited them over.
"He sent over a security guard to invite them over to his VIP booth. It’s upset them all. They’re in tears. She’s a good girl and comes from a decent family."
There is no suggestion proud family man Rooney did anything untoward or behaved inappropriately with it being unclear how old the pictures are, and he was pictured back on the training ground on Monday.
