Pogba comments on Souness speak volumes as Sky Sports pundit leaves

Graeme Souness surprises football team with CPR training session

Throughout his time at Manchester United, Paul Pogba would often be criticised by Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness. So when it emerged the former Liverpool star would be stepping down from his role with the broadcaster on Sunday, Pogba’s name inevitably trended. However, the current Juventus star has previously made it clear he wasn’t fazed by what was thrown at him and it wasn’t as big a deal as many have made out.

It speaks volumes that Pogba was never really too bothered by what Sourness had to say.

Not because he doesn’t care, but because he never felt the need to prove himself having won four Serie A titles, two trophies with United and the 2018 World Cup with France over the course of his career.

In 2020, Pogba was directly asked about Souness’ criticism. The Sky Sports pundit, in the eyes of some fans, had an agenda against the Juventus midfielder.

And Pogba shrugged it off by saying he didn’t even know who the former Liverpool star was, saying: “I didn’t even know who he was, really.

“I heard he was a great player and stuff like that. I know the face but [not] the name.

“Like I said I’m not someone that watches a lot of [punditry], I watch a lot of football but I don’t stay after the game to listen to what they say about why they did this or why they did that. I like to focus on football.”

He then proceeded to add: “I guess they miss me, I don’t know? I’m not someone that looks always at Sky Sports News.

“When you know football, you don’t need someone to tell you what’s happening.

“One day maybe I will meet them [the critics] and ask them because I really want to know why.

“I am doing my recovery, I can be somewhere else and I hear something but I’m just doing my recovery, you know?

“If they want to speak they are allowed to speak, it’s their job to speak.

“I am used to it now. I am really used to it, it doesn’t bother me.

“It’s good to hear good stuff instead of bad stuff but when you play football you know yourself.

“It’s what your manager and teammates want, the rest is just talk. It’s selling stuff I think.”

Souness will certainly be missed.

Though harsh, he would often be fair. He wouldn’t, for example, go for Pogba out of the blue and many now feel that, in hindsight, he was right about the former United star.

Souness doubled down on his views on the France international earlier in the season, insisting he was ‘100 per cent right’ about the midfielder.

“People think we can’t be critical of the modern player,” he said on talkSPORT.

“When I was having a go at Paul Pogba, [they said] it was because it was Manchester United and my Liverpool connections.

“But I think I was the first one to call Pogba out as an average player in our league, and I think I was proven 100 per cent right at the end of the day.

“Listen, I’m paid to offer an opinion and I’ve been in the game 50 years.

“So I think I’m entitled to have an opinion. Don’t be so precious.

“I don’t have a vendetta against anyone at all, this is just my opinion.

“So there is absolutely no agenda against anyone. I’ve explained my thinking about football.”

Souness was emotional as he stepped down from his Sky role, saying: “I’ll miss you, I’ll miss you guys and the guys behind the scenes, our makeup girl.

“I’ll miss you. For me, I realised football management wasn’t for me anymore.

“I had the wrong temperament for it and then I was given the opportunity to do this and it’s been magnificent… It’s been the most fantastic time for me because I love football, I worry about football but in Sky’s hands, it’s in safe hands.

“And I think over the years we’ve treated the Premier League with great detail, not always love, but great detail and I think we look after football very well.

“But for me personally I’ve got the buzz of live football, going to some fantastic events and fantastic stadiums. I think I owe a hundred apologies but I haven’t got time for that.

“To people that maybe I’ve said some harsh things to but I think people at home don’t want us to agree. It’s great right now to be amongst friends and nothing goes on forever.

“I’ve got lots of things coming up, I’ve got my charity and on the 22nd coming up, I’m going to announce a challenge I’m getting involved in and that’s important to me but it’s been great. So, thank you to everybody.”
