Pochettino confirms Messi is set for PSG return against Stade de Reims

Mauricio Pochettino confirms Lionel Messi will make his long-awaited PSG return against Reims after recovering from Covid, having spent the last three weeks on the sidelines battling the virus

  • Lionel Messi is back in the PSG squad for Sunday’s clash with Stade de Reims 
  • The Argentine has been out of action since his positive Covid test on January 2
  • Messi picked up the virus while back in Argentina during Ligue 1’s winter break
  • But Pochettino says he is now fit and firing again ahead of Sunday’s match 

Lionel Messi will make his comeback for Paris St Germain against Stade de Reims on Sunday after fully recovering from COVID-19, coach Mauricio Pochettino said on Saturday.

The Argentine forward has not played this year after getting infected during the European winter break.

‘He trained well during the week with the squad and I’m happy he’s back with us,’ Pochettino told a news conference.

‘He’ll be in the squad tomorrow.’

Pochettino added that French forward Kylian Mbappe would also be included in the squad after nursing a groin injury.

‘I’m happy with the way it went. We’ll see if he can start or not,’ the Argentine said.

PSG lead the Ligue 1 standings with 50 points from 21 games, 11 head of second-placed Nice.

They picked up their first victory of 2022 on Saturday at home to Brest, running out comfortable 2-0 winners after drawing 1-1 away at Lyon the week prior.
