Scotland’s hopes of winning through to the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time ended with a sobering 3-1 Euro 2020 defeat by Croatia at Hampden Park.

The Scots, playing in their first major tournament since the 1998 France World Cup, needed a victory in their final Group D fixture to reach the last 16 but despite a big effort fell short again.

Sportsmail’s Jack Gaughan rated the players.

Scott McTominay did well in an unfamiliar position but Scotland missed his midfield authority

David Marshall – 6.5

Very little he could have done about Croatia’s goals. Swept up well behind the defence.

Scott McTominay – 6

Decent reading of the game in an unfamiliar position but Scotland miss his authority in midfield.

Grant Hanley – 5.5

Anchoring a back three is a big ask and Hanley struggled to deal with Bruno Petkovic dropping off.

Kieran Tierney – 6

Excellent understanding with Andy Robertson down the left and some big defensive challenges.

Scotland midfielder Callum McGregor scored a stunning equaliser on the stroke of half-time

Stephen O’Donnell – 5

Found it tough. Caught under the ball in the build-up to Nikola Vasic firing the visitors in front.

Stuart Armstrong – 6

Use of the ball is nowhere near Billy Gilmour’s but he is a willing runner going forward.

John McGinn – 6.5

The midfielder with responsibility to go and join in. Always a threat when breaking the lines.

Callum McGregor – 7

Scored a stunning equaliser on the stroke of half-time, rattled in from the edge of the box.

Midfielder John McGinn made his presence felt and he was always a threat against Croatia

Andy Robertson – 6.5

Undoubtedly gives this team something extra in the final third and can sharply change the tempo.

Lyndon Dykes – 6

Industrious display again from Dykes, who proved a handful and brought others into play.

Che Adams – 6.5

Lively as a foil to Dykes. Possesses a constant goal threat and occupies defenders in dangerous areas.
