PLAYER RATINGS: Patrick Bamford's crucial penalty miss proves costly

PLAYER RATINGS: Patrick Bamford’s crucial penalty miss proves costly as Callum Wilson nets two spot-kicks of his own as Leeds and Newcastle share the points at Elland Road

  • Leeds salvaged a point in their relegation battle as they drew 2-2 with Newcastle
  • Luke Ayling put Leeds ahead before Callum Wilson hit two goals from the spot
  • Rasums Kristensen equalised to give Sam Allardyce his first point as Leeds boss

Sam Allardyce won his first point as Leeds manager as his side earned a point in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Newcastle at Elland Road.

The home side went ahead inside the first time minutes through Luke Ayling, but then missed the chance to double their lead when Nick Pope saved Patrick Bamford’s penalty.

To rub salt into the wounds, Newcastle were swiftly awarded a penalty of their own to see Callum Wilson draw the Magpies level. The striker then repeated the trick with twenty minutes to go, netting a second spot-kick to give Eddie Howe’s team the lead.

Rasums Kristensen managed to salvage a point for Leeds ten minutes from time, but if remains to see it the point will be enough to keep them in the division.

Leeds

Joel Robles 5

Had no chance with either of Callum Wilson’s clinical penalties. Too many unconvincing punches made for a far from assured display.

Luke Ayling 8

The Leeds skipper led by example in another lung-bursting effort rewarded with an early goal.

Rasmus Kristensen 8

An unlikely goal hero, the Dane relished the physical battle provided by Callum Wilson and deserved his slice of luck with his late leveller.

Rasmus Kristensen’s goal meant Leeds got a vital point in their battle against the drop

Max Wober 5

The Australian will look back with regret on his needless, ill-timed challenge on Alexander Isak which led to Newcastle’s game-changing penalty.

Junior Firpo 5

Sent-off in stoppage time and in truth it was a red card that had been coming in an increasingly ill-disciplined display from the full-back.

Weston McKennie 4

Weston who? As he has been too many times since his arrival on loan mid-way through the season, the US international was a largely peripheral figure.

American Weston McKennie failed to get to grips with the Newcastle attackers all afternoon

Robin Koch 6

The Germany international had his work cut out in a no-holds-barred midfield tussle with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, but gave as good as he got.

Sam Greenwood 6

The young Wearsider has impressed Sam Allardyce since the new manager’s arrival and it’s easy to see why as the midfielder continues to underline his potential.

Rodrigo 7

Played a key part in Leeds’ early goal and reminded Leeds of the void he left during a six-week injury absence earlier this year with another whole-hearted display.

Patrick Bamford 3

You can’t miss penalties, especially in Leeds’ predicament. Bamford’s latest costly gaffe helped turn the tide Newcastle’s way.

Patrick Bamford shows his disappointment after missing a first-half penalty for Leeds

Jack Harrison 5

Neat and tidy and got through more than his fair share of work, but the forward largely lacked a cutting edge.

Substitutes:

Adam Forshaw for Greenwood 46 mins – 8

Willy Gnonto for Harrison 64 mins – 6

Brenden Aaronson for Rodrigo 87 mins

Pascal Struijk for Bamford 90 mins

Substitutes (not used): Meslier, Roca, Summerville, Rutter, Gray.

Newcastle

Nick Pope 7

Showed uncharacteristically indecisive handling in the run-up to Luke Ayling’s opener but more than atoned with his crucial penalty save form Bamford.

Nick Pope was the Newcastle hero as he saved a Patrick Bamford penalty in the first half

Kieran Trippier 7

Another cool-headed display amidst the mayhem from the Newcastle skipper who barely put a foot wrong.

Fabian Schar 7

Put his feet and head in where it hurts when it mattered and continues to be Toon’s unsung hero of their stand-out campaign.

Sven Botman 7

Won’t be happy with being part of a back four to ship two goals, but on an individual level, the Dutchman did little wrong.

Dan Burn 6

The make-shift full-back coped with most of what Rodrigo could throw at him all game to underline his versatility and value to Eddie Howe.

Bruno Guimaraes 5

Has looked off the pace in the last couple of matches, and a second-half caution for diving is hardly something to write home about.

Bruno Guimares wasn’t at his best and was booked in the second half for diving by the ref

Joelinton 6

The focal point for much of Newcastle’s work going forward, but the Brazilian’s reckless challenge to concede a first-half penalty should have proved more costly.

Joe Willock 4

For the most part, the midfielder played the unwanted role of a little lad lost among the big boy challenges.

Miguel Almiron 6

Put in a great shift down the right both going forward and tracking back and came agonisingly close to scoring in first-half stoppage time.

Two more goals from Callum Wilson means the striker now has 15 goals for Newcastle this term

Callum Wilson 9

Twice held his nerve to make it seven goals in the last five games to show the hapless Bamford exactly how to take penalties under pressure.

Alexander Isak 8

Continues to look a threat operating down the left after the tactical switch to accommodate both Wilson and the Swede in the starting line-up.

Substitutes:

Anthony Gordon for Almiron 72 mins

Allan Saint-Maximin for Wilson 72 mins

Elliot Anderson for Willock 87 mins

Substitutes (not used): Dubravka, Dummett, Lewis, Targett, Manquillo, Murphy.
