PIF’s motive behind choosing Newcastle over rival clubs explained by Ginola

David Ginola has provided his thoughts about the Newcastle takeover – saying that the reason the new owners chose the club was that they’re still a ‘big name’.

Newcastle will play Tottenham this afternoon, marking the first match under the new regime.

Speaking before the game, former Magpies and Spurs winger Ginola answered a question about why it was Newcastle who were chosen by PIF, the Saudi Arabian owners who hold an 80% stake in the club.

“Because it’s still a big name and I think they rely on the fact they talk about the fans,” the 54-year-old said via Sky Sports. “The fans made a huge impact in their decision. I think they have in their imagination to build something like Spurs did.

“Daniel Levy and all those people, they built a brand new stadium, the training ground is one of the best in the world. But that doesn’t mean success because they’re still waiting for silverware.

“And for Newcastle United, to concentrate on the wrong aspect will probably be the defeat of this. That’s why the people who are going to make the decision up there [points to director’s box] are massively important.

“It’s not just the pitch itself, it’s not just the manager, it’s everyone at the club who is going to make the right decision at the right time for the benefit of the club, thinking about the next five years.”

PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports Media announced on October 7 that they had taken full control of Newcastle, taking over from Mike Ashley, whose reign lasted 14 years.

The takeover – which rumbled on for almost 18 months owing to a stumbling block regarding the Premier League's director's and owner's test – has delighted supporters, with Newcastle now being the richest football team in the world.

Fans have spoken about how communication has improved with the club already – but some were hoping that winless Steve Bruce would not be in the dugout for the side’s upcoming encounter against Spurs.

However, it was announced that Bruce would indeed take charge of his 1,000th game as manager.
