Piers Morgan slams Chelsea for "weasel words" over Ukraine conflict statement

Piers Morgan has hit out at Chelsea's statement over the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The TV presenter tweeted: "More weasel words. Let’s see a statement from your Russian owner and long-time friend of Putin that specifically condemns the illegal invasion."

Morgan was responding to Chelsea's statement that was only 24 words long and made no mention of Russia.

Chelsea said: "The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace."

However, the statement comes one day after Roman Abramovich announced he was handing over the 'stewardship' of Chelsea to its trustees.

Abramovich said he always takes the "club’s best interest at heart" as that was the reasoning behind handing over the club to the trustees.

The Russian also said that he believes the trustees are in the "best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans."

The statement read: "During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

"I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values.

"That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

"I believe that currently, they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans."

Abramovich's future at Chelsea has been questioned after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Chelsea are scheduled to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday afternoon.
