Piers Morgan says David Beckham "wouldnt have got on Arsenal Invincibles bench"

Piers Morgan has made the questionable claim that David Beckham would not have even managed to secure a place on the Arsenal bench during the 2003/04 season.

The TV presenter was watching the Super Bowl when he compared LA Rams’ wide receiver, Odell Beckham Junior, with the former England international.

“Great to watch a Beckham who can actually play football,” Morgan tweeted.

But Gary Lineker came in and stood up for the former Manchester United winger. The Match of the Day presenter said: “You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest.”

But then Morgan doubled-down on his take, responding to Lineker with: “You might want to suck up to him, for whatever reason, but Beckham was the most overrated player in history. Wouldn't have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench.”

Morgan, a Gunners fan, was talking of course about the record-breaking and unprecedented season from almost 20 years ago when Arsene Wenger led his side – peppered with names such as Thierry Henry and Robert Pires – to a league title without losing a single game in the league.

But Lineker took Morgan’s remark as a lack of respect and said: “6 Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 1 Champions League, 1 La Liga, 1 Ligue 1. Balón d’Or runner up. 115 caps for England, 59 as captain. One of the best crossers of the ball the game has ever seen. Yeah, overrated."

The tweet was even liked by Manchester City and England attacker Jack Grealish.

Beckham was part of the Class of 92 and went on to make 265 Premier League appearances for United across 11 seasons, scoring 61 goals.

While there, the 46-year-old won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FA Youth Cup.

Beckham also had spells at Preston North End (loan), Real Madrid, AC Milan (loan), LA Galaxy and PSG before hanging up his boots in May 2013.

There’s an old trope that the former Los Blancos star has been known for his lack of attention on the pitch – and yet his discipline to training is well-documented.

Sir Alex Ferguson's once said that Beckham "practiced with a discipline to achieve an accuracy that other players wouldn't care about.”
