Piers Morgan blasts Arteta’s Aubameyang spat is to ‘look tough for cameras’

TV journalist Piers Morgan has publicly blasted Mikel Arteta for treatment of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the Arsenal attacker was stripped of his captaincy.

The Gunners forward is having a tough time in front of goal – scoring just four times in 14 Premier League games this season – but also off-the-field matters are not going so well either.

After taking a sanctioned trip abroad, the 32-year-old was deprived of the club captaincy on Tuesday, reportedly for misinterpreting Covid-19 protocols.

But Morgan has said that Arteta is treating the forward poorly to show off to the Amazon production team who are currently filming the goings-on with the Gunners this season ahead of a documentary.

“Arteta’s ongoing public shaming of @Auba is disgusting,” he tweeted.

“Horrible classless disloyalty that I suspect is purely designed to make him look tough for the Amazon cameras, and to distract from his own very mediocre performance as manager.”

The Gabonese striker trained on Thursday but was dropped from the squad for Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Southampton, and won’t be in the squad for the clash against West Ham on Wednesday.

"Following his latest disciplinary breach last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be our club captain, and will not be considered for selection for Wednesday's match against West Ham United," the statement read.

We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed. We are fully focused on tomorrow’s match."

Recently, Kwaku Mensah, the agent of Aubamayeng took aim at Arteta as well, uploading two pictures of his client lifting both the FA Cup and Community Shield in the summer of 2020, games he played a huge role in.

Speaking at his press conference on Tuesday, Arteta declared: "It's a really clear statement from the club. It's a decision we have made following the last incident with the player. This is where we stand."

Asked when the striker could make a return to the pitch, Arteta said: "We need a bit of time. It needs a bit of time to heal. For now, he's not involved in the squad."
