Arsenal could be left red-faced if a release clause in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Barcelona contract is ever met. Aubameyang agreed to terminate his deal with Arsenal following a public falling out with boss Mikel Arteta and has since joined Barca, with the LaLiga side confirming his arrival on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old striker had sensationally been excluded from the first-team squad and stripped of the captaincy by Arteta because of a disciplinary breach in December.

Aubameyang has not featured since December 6, when he was used as a substitute in the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat by Everton.

Arteta continued to refuse to turn to the Gabon international and will argue that his decision was justified. Arsenal lost just one of the six Premier League fixtures for which Aubameyang was available but not used.

Aubameyang’s misery was finally ended on transfer Monday, with Arsenal announcing that they had agreed to terminate his contract. It brought an end to a roller-coaster four years for the former Borussia Dortmund star at the Emirates Stadium.

The forward, who scored 92 goals for the Gunners, spent transfer deadline day in Barcelona. A deal to join the Catalan side has finally been confirmed two days later.
