Phil Jones went from being Sir Alexs favourite to Man Utds unsellable man

Manchester United are struggling to generate any interest from other clubs for a potential move for their forgotten man Phil Jones this summer.

Jones has been on the Red Devils' book since 2011 when he signed from Blackburn Rovers, and he's the last surviving member of United's 12/13 Premier League triumph.

Sir Alex Ferguson had high hopes for Jones when he first signed for United.

However, in recent years, the centre-back has struggled for game time in the red half of Manchester.

And Jones has recently been described as unsellable by the United hierarchy as they look to relieve him of his services.

“I think United have signed a future captain of England. He will be an England regular very soon," Steve Kean, who was then manager of Blackburn, said in a statement.

United had just completed the signing of Jones for the hefty fee of just over £17million for the 19-year-old.

Jones was yet to represent England, he only had youth appearances, but United had seen enough in the youngster to hand him a huge contract.

Blackburn had fought hard to keep him, and the Venky's had sought legal advice on how to stop him leaving, but he still left.

And it didn't take long for Jones to impress in Manchester.

Speaking after their 12/13 top division triumph Sir Alex said: "Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player.

"I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, no matter where we play him.

"At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch.

"He has such a massive influence, with his instinct and reading of the game. He has a drive about him."

But, for Jones and United, the good times couldn't keep rolling.

The Red Devils have failed to conquer the Premier League since, and shortly after their triumph, Sir Alex retired from management.

A revolving door of managers followed, and each failed to extract the talent from Jones that Ferguson once saw and spoke so highly about, instead leaving him out of squads or on the bench.

However, Jones still turned out regular for his country, and he earned call ups for both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

Injuries began to catch up with the defender, and his once-promising career began to unravel as he struggled to even make the matchday squads.

Jones didn't manage to make an appearance last season, mainly due to an injury that has kept him on the sidelines for 13 months.

And during the 19/20 campaign, he was given two starts with no appearances off the bench.

And with his long lay off, Jones has failed to command a transfer fee this summer.

It's easy to forget Jones is still only 28-years-old and could still have his best years ahead of him.

However, he is still under contract with United until 2023, and if he doesn't move on this summer it's not hard to see Jones remaining in the footballing wilderness until then.
